NIH TRAINING GRANT

Educational Opportunities and Meetings

Our training program is designed to provide education and a mentoring environment to young physicians and scientists interested in academic research in the areas of burn injury and trauma.  The program includes basic or bench top research, animal research and human or clinical studies teaching the concepts of interpreting basic information from the laboratory and applying it to clinical problems and clinical research.  Specific areas of study within trauma and burn injury include cardiopulmonary pathophysiology, acute lung injury, thermal injury and resuscitation, metabolism, molecular responses to injury, sepsis, wound healing, and longitudinal psychological and physical adaptation to trauma with community reintegration.

The primary goal of our program is to prepare young academic scientists to be independent and to incorporate the state of the art techniques learned during their training period in their research.  It is hoped that the research findings will ultimately lead to the dissemination of new knowledge and procedures for the care of thermally injured patients.

All Shriners Burn Hospital-Galveston fellows involved in research meet weekly for a lecture series with senior investigators.  The fellows present lectures on topics related to burn and trauma.  At these presentations the faculty critique the candidates and help them in developing their skills as lecturers.  There is also a bi-monthly scientific staff meeting where various research programs are discussed and there is a presentation from the faculty and fellows on their research efforts.  The fellows are encouraged to attend a morning conference, which covers most of the subject materials of the basic sciences as they pertain to critical care medicine.  This conference is held four times a week for 45 minutes.  Fellows are also encouraged to attend weekly Morbidity and Mortality Conferences in Anesthesia and Surgery, and Surgical Grand Rounds.  At the beginning of each academic year, a seminar describing the standards and ethics of research accepted by universities is presented to new research fellows by Dr. Robert Barrow, Chairman of the Advisory Ethics Committee at the Shriners Burns Hospital.  In addition, all fellows are required to view a video on ‘Ethical Issues in Scientific Research’ from the Research Triangle Park Club of Sigma Xi.  All licensed staff have completed an instructional program in good clinical practices.
